Jol Mulholland is a self-taught, two-time Tui Award-winning multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer and sound engineer whose influence runs deep through Aotearoa’s musical landscape. Raised in Christchurch and now based in Auckland, Jol’s musical journey began at age eleven when he found a guitar on the side of the road – a spark that ignited a lifelong obsession with sound, songwriting, and sonic experimentation.
Over the past two decades, he has released a wide range of acclaimed work – from his bands Gasoline Cowboy and The Mots, to his classical guitar duo Pablo Vasquez, to his rich and genre-blending solo albums (Mulholland, Eugene Told Me You Were Dead, Stop & Start Again). His single Perfect Health earned a Silver Scroll nomination, and his most recent album was written in the rare moments between a packed schedule of collaborations and production work.
Jol is a sought-after creative partner and producer, with a studio (The Oven) that’s become a hub for some of New Zealand’s most respected and genre-diverse artists. He’s worked with Neil Finn, Liam Finn, Tami Neilson, Troy Kingi, Anna Coddington, Theia, French for Rabbits, Pluto, Racing, Kaylee Bell, and others – including work on the second album from Tāmaki Makaurau indie band Park Rd, and the debut album from Daffodils.
In addition to his own music and productions, Jol has contributed to mentorship and songwriting initiatives including Concord Music, SongHubs and Play It Strange, supporting the next generation of artists. Whether behind the mic, the mixing desk, or a nylon-string guitar, Jol brings a distinct voice, collaborative spirit, and deep musical intuition to every project he touches.
