You better ready yourself for that question when Evening Is Youth release their debut single on September 3rd.
The three members of exhilarating Auckland trio Evening Is Youth: front-man Connor Robinson-Pierce (singer/guitarist), Jack Collin (bassist) and busy guy Luke Lattimore (drummer/fireman/pilot/electrician) deliver two minutes and twelve seconds of brilliance in Did You Find Your Brain? – a track that confidently careens between the whimsical and the chaotic.
Did You Find Your Brain? lyrically explores serious topics – connecting dots between universal adolescent concerns around mental health, identity and self worth.
Sonically highlighting their obsessive fascination with early 80’s post-punk and first-wave Britpop, the young band also weaves electronic elements (reminiscent of MGMT, Animal Collective and M83), into the songs of their forthcoming EP.
Punchy and textural, Evening Is Youth cleverly wrap dark lyrical themes around wonderfully hooky alt-pop melodies.
Evening Is Youth signed to Bigpop Records in 2019 after impressing Bigpop’s Chris van de Geer with their support act for Chris’s band Stellar* at a Wellington show.
Since then the band has been busily experimenting at Bigpop Studios with engineer/producer Jacob Rush. The result is an EP’s worth of high impact tracks of which Did You Find Your Brain? is first off the blocks.
The somewhat unnerving animated music video for Did You Find Your Brain? was self-directed by Connor. Fully crafted within the PlayStation game ‘Dreams,’ the psychological themes of Did You Find Your Brain? are personified by a shadowy figure trapped in an empty white room. Connor describes the anonymous figure as “As a person that cannot decide who they are, who doesn’t fit into the situations they are presented with. They are lost and confused, trying to find something they can attach themselves to”.
