Mazbou Q’s Shockingly Raw New Single ‘Pour One Out’
Today Mazbou Q reveals the third single for his project of fortnightly releases, entitled Pour One Out. Pulsating guitars form the sonic backdrop for this emotive number, decorated with luscious neo-80’s style synths and driven by Mazbou Q’s signature hard hitting drum samples. As the track moves, the vocal harmonies of each chorus crescendo in richness and complexity, culminating in a finely tuned six-part vocoder-esque acapella that is oh-so-satisfying to the ears.
Mazbou Q takes his listeners inward as he solemnly reflects on the harsh realities of life for people around the world. “The main lyric in the chorus isn’t sung from my perspective, necessarily” he says. “I sing ‘Please pour one out for me, if I don’t wake up from sleep’ as an ode to those who face the very real possibility of not making it to the next day. The idea that there is so much intense suffering in the world whilst I live a relatively privileged life often weighs heavy on my heart”.
Pour One Out follows March releases Deserter and The Get Up, as Mazbou Q progressively unearths a new body of work. After a name change from ‘Unchained XL’ in early 2020 and the release of his debut EP Afroternity, Mazbou Q gained publicity for reasons beyond the domain of music. That year he gained the attention of BBC, Euronews and Huffington Post UK for his work in the organisation of the Auckland Black Lives Matter solidarity march in June. He also organised the Auckland #EndSARS protest, addressing the issue of police brutality in his home country of Nigeria.
