Samuel Philip Cooper, an exciting and upcoming 25-year-old solo contemporary pianist from Wellington, New Zealand, is excited to release his second solo-piano single, Hope In Your Heart, following the release of his debut single Broken Heart Recovery in August.
Listen to Hope In Your Heart here.
Soft, healing and soothing, Hope In Your Heart expresses the sad, but yet hopeful emotions that arose in Samuel’s soul when a person close to him told Samuel they’d been diagnosed with cancer and would need to undergo chemotherapy.
“Right in the moment of hearing the news from the person face to face, my heart sank, and I wanted to do something to help beyond offering my sympathies and condolences, but I couldn’t. Then shortly after during my lunch break, I went straight to a nearby piano to reflect and deal with my sad emotions, and I improvised a melody that I felt signaled hope towards this person who was at the beginning of a difficult journey ahead. I felt that was all I could do at the time”, Samuel says.
As the melody to the song was initially inspired by hearing sad news, it was a reminder to Samuel about how important and helpful it is to speak out to close friends or family about any health related issue one is going through rather than fighting it alone. This was at the top of his mind as he developed and structured the song.
“Ultimately, this song is about stepping out of the dark/speaking up about various health struggles will enable more hope and brightness to be put in your heart, especially by your friends, family or GP. Their hope, love and support can put and lead you on a path to a brighter and happier place, instead suffering silently alone in darkness”, Samuel says. The song and its accompanying cover art aims convey this.
Hope in Your Heart is the second of two single releases that will form part of Samuel’s 18-song album, Breaking The Silence, which is set to be released in November.
A determined and passionate youth mental health advocate, Samuel’s’ solo piano is described as ‘soothing and healing’, and has recently been compared to Rick Wakeman’s piano works. Samuel hopes that by sharing the story behind Hope In Your Heart, he will help continue building discussion around mental health, and encouraging others to speak up about their struggles too instead of suffering alone.
