Tusekah drops bossa nova-infused power anthem ‘Always’

After a triumphant 2024, in which Tusekah firmly established herself as “one to watch”, the Auckland-based singer and songwriter returns with her first single of the year – the smooth, power anthem, Always.

Always finds Tusekah reflecting on a non-reciprocal relationship. “It was written about a time I realised someone that I cared about did not care about me,” she says.
It’s a powerful sentiment – “a song for anyone and everyone” – which is set to resonate with many. And cleverly, Tusekah delivers the message wrapped in an groove-laden, bossa nova-infused soundscape, which sees fellow Auckland-based artist (and producer) Ethan Jupe on production duties.
“Always tells a personal story in an upbeat manner. I try to find light in most situations. In this situation, I learnt that I needed to love myself more than the situation I was in.
It’s an empowering thing to have the realisation and have the courage to not let it define your worth,” explains Tusekah, who adds that she had just taken up Latin dancing when she wrote the song.
Always is accompanied by an equally powerful music video, inspired by ‘sonder’, which is the realisation that every person, including strangers, has a life as complex and as rich as your own.
“The video adds an added layer of perspective on the lyrics,” says Tusekah.
“I think the concept spoke to me, because no matter how much you love someone, they have their own perspective of the world. To have the realisation of ‘sonder’ is to realise that it doesn’t change your worth if someone is unable to love you the way you love them but you should love yourself enough to walk away from a situation which is making you feel undervalued.”
Also helping to tie together the song’s message is the artwork, created by Danielle Hao-Aickin.
“In the music video we see multiple stories being told, yet in the cover it is just me. It’s to explain that in any situation, you have to be there for yourself and love yourself despite what is going on around you.”
