A habit of treading carefully feels like it has been hardwired into the artist from growing up, Jackaltheblackal believes. The musician from Tāmaki Makaurau spent his adolescence wanting to “just become a writer for games and whatever else,” all the while becoming Aotearoa’s quiet, unorthodox hip-hop figure.
Jackal sports an enigmatic yet densely-packed writing style (laden with conflict, macabre humour, and cultural references) and a gravelly vocal delivery filled with both haste & uncertainty. Underneath it all is his collage of jittery yet rich sample-heavy production that sounds like a slow burn of hazy memories of aged cartoons & cassette tapes.
