Venice Qin has just released her much-anticipated debut album, 奔月 Moonlanding. Aotearoa-born, Qin is now based in Sydney, Australia. The album’s title literally translates to ‘Rushing to the Moon.’ This is a nod to the legend of Chang’e, the moon goddess, which is fitting, as the album takes you on an uplifting, energetic ascent straight away. The album is rich and warm. When talking about the record, Qin said she has always struggled with her identity and how and where she sits in culture and social groups and in the music world. But this album truly feels like a release, a liberation; her vocals are powerful and poignant. You can tell she has poured all her heart and energy into every word. The tracks are well-balanced, and the record flows beautifully from track to track.
Angel stands out as a powerful track; it speaks of a toxic relationship she fell into after relocating from Aotearoa to Sydney.
“This one’s about the war inside – the tug-of-war between every version of me. Angel is me taking ownership, not just of the good parts, but the messy ones too.” – Qin. Although it is talking about a chaotic and stressful time in her life, the track is catchy and really draws you in. The lyrics are very well written; this song already feels like a hit.
Other personal favourites from the album are Bubblegum, a two and a half minute pop track that is undeniably catchy, and New Woman, another powerful track from the album, delivered with so much energy. Qin has also created some absolutely beautiful and cinematic videos that accompany these songs and are definitely worth checking out.
This album was a great listen, the 10 tracks are well thought out, and it takes you on a real journey. It feels like a real liberation, Qin stepping outside of her comfort zone and showing the world who she is and what she is all about. It is very unapologetic and overall a very strong debut album. Qin has very obviously poured a lot of energy, love, and hours into this record, every lyric, beat, and visual feels deliberate and well-polished. If you love pop music, getting into your feelings, and a touch of fantasy, this album is for you!
Well done, Venice Qin and everyone involved!
