Indie-alternative newcomer Jack Bromwich delivers an emotionally resonant and sonically rich debut with his EP Poser, Freak. Bromwich stands as a quintessential Kiwi artist – honest, self-aware, and unafraid to dive into the complexities of emotion. From the opening notes, the EP feels like a time capsule transporting you back to the late 90’s, echoing the confessional tones of artists like Pete Yorn, Evan Dando, and Ryan Adams. It’s music steeped in vulnerability, framed by a nostalgic yet fresh sound.

The title track, Poser, Freak, is an instant standout. It’s where Bromwich’s lyrical honesty and melodic sensibility fully converge. There’s a rawness in his delivery – part sneer, part plea – that taps into a feeling many can relate to: the discomfort of not quite fitting in. The track leans into a grungy, almost lo-fi aesthetic, yet the production is polished enough to highlight the subtle textures beneath the surface. It’s personal, gripping, and emotionally layered. Easily my favourite on the EP.

Another highlight is Dust, a track that wouldn’t feel out of place on Ryan Adams’ Demolition. It features an unexpected orchestral-style backing vocal, creating a layered, anthemic chorus that feels like a sporting chant – rousing and melancholic all at once. It adds a sense of urgency and atmosphere to the track, reinforcing the emotional weight of the lyrics without overshadowing them.

He Waits Alone slows the pace but not the intensity. With a jangly guitar tone reminiscent of Pavement or early Wilco, it exudes a sleepy melancholy. There’s a feeling of isolation here that’s palpable – the kind that creeps in quietly and lingers. Bromwich’s storytelling really shines in moments like this, where space is left between the notes for the listener to sit with the emotion.

Throughout the EP, Bromwich demonstrates a strong understanding of mood and structure. The arrangements are thoughtful, the lyrics poetic without being pretentious, and the vocals full of character. It’s rare to hear a debut that feels this assured.

With a busy end to 2025 ahead, including a release show on November 28th and hopefully a full-length album in the works, Jack Bromwich is an artist to keep on your radar. Poser, Freak is not only a promising start – it’s a statement of intent.
