Nima Astria Releases ‘deny’
Tāmaki-based DJ and artist Nima Astria returns with her second single deny, centering her voice amidst swirling trip-hop production and introspective modernist Persian poetry from 1964.
In deny, Nima begins the track by reciting lines from Tavalodi Digar (Born again), by pioneering Iranian modernist poet and film-director Forough Farrokhzad. The poem contains themes of rebirth and self-discovery following heartbreak, complementing the melancholic and reflective nature of Nima’s lyricism. Due to the nature of the Islamic revolution, Forough’s poetry was strictly banned for 10 years, for its sensuality and its commentary on gender inequality and misogyny, seen as taboo by Islamic standards.
Her first track to be wholly self-produced, deny immerses us fully into Nima Astria’s sonic world of downtempo, trip-hop and ambient, inspired by artists such as Vanessa Daou and Love Spirals Downwards.
