Home Brew are one of Aotearoa’s most beloved hip-hop groups, rising to equal parts greatness and infamy through their extensive run of EPs through the early 2010’s and culminating in their now-classic #1 self-titled debut. The band re-entered the charts with their brand-new album Run It Back in 2023, securing them a raft of new fans.

Their aggressively DIY ethos has endeared them to many in the New Zealand Hip-Hop music scene, and they have cemented their place in history as one of the country’s most authentic, uncompromising acts.

Home Brew join Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 on the Winter Series line-up, with more to be announced.

“This EP is where it all started for us.

We made it in 7 days. Put it out 7 days later. One song each day. Week after the warriors had just played. Posted it up on smoko break. I remember playing ‘thursday’ it to my flatmates straight after Thursday had just happened. It was live reporting from our little flat on Aroha Ave. Made it in this little wash house we used to call the shack.

A

Something about it resonated with people. I think maybe it’s just cause it was some real shit. Sounds pretentious to say that now but at that time most of us wanted to rap like we weren’t from here. So it sounded fresh at the time to hear some kids talking about real life in nz. We weren’t thinking that far ahead. We’d just kinda given up on trying to fake it to fit into radio formula and all that shit. Had nothing else to lose so we just thought fuck it, let’s just own this.

B

Then this dude said he wanted to put it on wax, we were like fuck yeah and so we printed 200. Next minute it’s selling on discogs for like a grand +. I sold mine to pay the bills. Or the ticks or whatever. And now we’re here.

Might even make a ‘next week’. But that’s for next week.

For now, we’re gonna run up this show at the town hall, reminisce a little on this little EP we made about our little lives.”

🙏
