Murphy Moore Confronts Small Town Shadows in ‘Tall Poppy’

Aotearoa New Zealand indie-country artist, Murphy Moore, returns with her powerful new single, Tall Poppy, a bold and deeply personal commentary on the country’s notorious tall poppy syndrome.
Inspired by her experience growing up in a small town, Tall Poppy captures what it feels like to stand out in a place where success can make you a target rather than a source of pride. The track paints a vivid portrait of New Zealand’s culture, where celebration often comes with conditions, and praise is very much a double edged sword.
“Tall Poppy is about that strange tension of being celebrated and resented at the same time,” says Moore. “I think so many of us have felt the effects of tall poppy syndrome. In small communities, everyone knows your story, or thinks they do. I wanted to write something honest about how ambition can be incredibly isolating”.
Driven by raw lyricism, this emotional country ballad explores the push-and-pull of trying to meet expectations while staying true to yourself.
Tall Poppy marks a striking evolution in Moore’s sound and songwriting. It stands as both a deeply personal reflection and an anthem for anyone who has ever been told they are too much, too ambitious, or living in an unrealistic world.
Produced in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and engineer Christian Tjandrawinata, Tall Poppy features lap steel, harmonicas, and mandolins, creating a rich, modern country sound.
Tall Poppy is out now on all major streaming platforms.
