Antoine Audonnet Explores the Fine Line Between Love & Obsession on ‘American Idol’

Emerging New Zealand alternative-pop artist Antoine Audonnet returns with his latest single, American Idol, arriving today, June 26, 2026. Blending cinematic production with intimate lyricism, the track explores the dangerous space where devotion becomes self-sacrifice, capturing the desire to become everything another person needs – even at the expense of your own identity.
Built around soaring melodies and emotionally charged songwriting, American Idol reflects on the pressure of being placed on a pedestal while willingly climbing onto it yourself. The song examines the complexities of idolisation within relationships, where admiration slowly transforms into obsession and unconditional love begins to erode personal identity.
“American Idol explores the fine line between love, admiration, and obsession,” says Audonnet. “It’s about the temptation to become someone’s answer to everything – their comfort, their certainty, their escape – and the sacrifices that come with that. I was interested in the idea of being placed on a pedestal while willingly climbing onto it yourself, giving more and more of who you are in the hope that it will be enough.”
The single continues Antoine’s signature approach to songwriting, combining vulnerable storytelling with expansive, atmospheric production. Following releases including Crashed, Mine To Miss, and The Greatest, American Idol further develops his distinctive artistic voice – one rooted in emotional honesty, cinematic aesthetics, and deeply personal narratives.
Since making his debut in 2025, Antoine has accumulated more than 100,000 streams across streaming platforms and performed his debut live show at Auckland’s Big Fan, steadily establishing himself as one of New Zealand’s promising independent alternative-pop artists.
American Idol is now available on all major streaming platforms.
