A Mokopuna of the once dubbed ‘Crayford Jazz Dynasty’, multi-instrumentalist GiGi grew up immersed in family music & culture in Te Whanganui ā Tara. She has been a multi dimensional artist her whole life more recently known for her enigmatic voice & powerfully captivating stage presence.

After moving back to ancestral land of Ngāti Raukawa in Ōtaki & three years in full immersion Te Reo Māori her EP draws from her experience of tracing whakapapa, connecting to pūrākau & the Māori world.

Ka Mua Ka Muri EP by HINE is a blend of indigenous folk, jazz & poetry honouring different Atua Wahine with songs in both te reo Maori and English. Instrumentation by Hine & her whānau of jazz maestros woven with Taonga Pūoro personally carved & played by GiGi.

Ka Mua Ka Muri bridges across worlds past, present & future. the journey of remembering & reclaimation. It is a sonic journey of Whakapapa.”

This project brings echoes of the emotionally drenched lyricism of Joni Mitchell, the enigmatic voice akin to Kate Bush & soaring ecstatic moments like Pink Floyd. Interwoven with Taonga Pūoro; creating a contemporary genre-bending experience. HINE reverberates with authentic expression, wahine power & the vital place music has in healing & self discovery.

Following her successful release & full show at Māoriland of her debut single in 2024 HINE received funding support from Creative NZ in order to release & promote the remaining songs on the Ka Mua Ka Muri EP.

The Full EP and Release Tour kicks off 25th July.
