Eigenface Release Second Video Single ‘Slow Exposure’ + Announce Album
Following the release of their debut single House by the Sea, New Zealand / New York trio Eigenface return with Slow Exposure, the second single from their forthcoming self-titled debut album, due October 2nd on Home Alone Records. Accompanied by a new music video, Slow Exposure offers another glimpse into the band’s atmospheric world.
On Slow Exposure, rather than looking nostalgically at old photographs, the song is fascinated by photography itself, and how an image can be lifted out of time and accepted as evidence, memory or even truth. Written by bassist and vocalist Elliot Vaughan, the song reflects on the curious power photographs hold over our understanding of the past while questioning how much they can really tell us. Portraiture, perception and the tension between objectivity and interpretation all drift through the song’s playful, propulsive lyricism.
Vaughan says of the song: “When you look at the photo of someone, they gaze back at you. But it’s lopsided – they are at once an instant and an eternity, and you’re just a dopey thing stumbling through linear earth time, but the photo is the concept of truth itself. So I put that on the bounciest riff I could write.”
Eigenface is a New Zealand/New York trio that blend folk intimacy, dream-punk atmospheres and electronic experimentation. Their songs move between comfort and unease, pairing bright melodies with dissonance, layered vocal harmonies and richly textured arrangements. With a sound that sits comfortably alongside artists such as Everything Everything, Son Lux and Loma while harking back to Radiohead and Portishead, Eigenface have developed a softly disarming style that finds beauty in uncertainty.
Eigenface are Penelope Esplin (French for Rabbits, Lake South, Grawlixes), Elliot Vaughan (CNZ/NZSM Composer in Residence 2024, Moth Quartet) and Logan Valentine (Moon Lander). Slow Exposure appears on the band’s self-titled debut album, due October 2nd on Home Alone Records. Recorded and mixed by Vaughan, mastered by Harris Newman (Wolf Parade, Buck Meek, Godspeed You! Black Emperor), and featuring Vaughan’s lush string arrangements throughout, the album delivers post-pop, paired with bright melodies and subtle dissonance, layered harmonies and richly textured arrangements. Across its songs, the band explores memory, place, relationships and the tension between beauty and discomfort through expansive arrangements, electronic textures and intimate storytelling. The band will celebrate the release of their debut album with a New Zealand tour in October and November.
