Fat Freddy’s Drop Announce ‘Based On A True Story’ 21st Anniversary Nelson Shows

Fat Freddy’s Drop are bringing their Based On A True Story 21st Anniversary Tour back to Aotearoa this Summer, for two special shows; playing back to back nights at Neudorf Vineyards this January. Doing it for the love of music, the band will play Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 January 2027 amongst the vines in the summer hotspot of Nelson. Tickets for both shows go on sale 12pm Monday 17 August from Ticketmaster.

2026 has been a year of reinvention and reconnection for Fat Freddy’s Drop. Their 51-date Based On A True Story 21st Anniversary Tour, saw the band play sell-out shows across the world cementing their place as a global musical force with an audience that spans far and wide. With more than 20 dates remaining throughout the UK and Europe, the band are in top form and are excited to extend the tour for two extra Aotearoa shows this Summer.

“These BOATS shows have been a complete joy to perform, and a real reminder of how deeply people love this music” says saxophonist Scott Towers, aka Chopper Reeds. “Our connection with Neudorf – the place, the people and the spirit of what they’re doing there – is deep too. It’s like doing a home show really. What a fantastic way to spend a weekend!”

Opening both Neudorf shows is MĀ, one of Aotearoa’s most distinctive, relevant and exciting new voices. The Te-Whanganui-a-Tara based artist blending neo-soul, conscious rap, jazz and Te Reo Māori, took home Te Manu Taki Whanokē, Best Alternative Artist Award at the 2026 Aotearoa Music Awards for her acclaimed album Blame It On The Weather.

Fat Freddy’s Drop were honoured with the Aotearoa Charts Icon Award at the Aotearoa Music Awards in May, recognising the band’s continued chart success and impact over their career. Of their eight independently released studio albums, four went to #1 on the Top 40 Album Charts. After its release in 2005, Based On A True Story spent 112 weeks in the chart, becoming Aotearoa’s longest charting album, and the highest selling Aotearoa vinyl release of the last 25 years.
