batbatGoose (bbG) is a dance/electronic project from Wellington, New Zealand, by James Battersby. The project is shaped by a deep-rooted love of indie rock and a growing obsession with the energy and groove of dance music.

Over time, James’ inspiration emerged through the lo-fi house movement, sparked by artists like Ross From Friends, and later expanded through the colourful, genre-blurring worlds of Barry Can’t Swim and Joy Anonymous. Rather than leaving his indie roots behind, bbG reimagines them in a new context.

A Moment is bbG’s second single, a piano-and-synth-led track built for headphones and the dance floor alike.

Where No Apology leaned into impact, A Moment pulls back, trading guitars for synths and piano. It draws on the groove-heavy piano house of Barry Can’t Swim and O’Flynn, layered with the synths of Rüfüs Du Sol, built around one refrain: “You’re just living in the moment, take your chance and maybe own it.”

“I intended the track to be uplifting, with a sense of optimism,” batbatGoose says. “That’s very applicable to where I’m at at the moment – putting myself out there, taking every opportunity I can.”

batbatGoose writes, produces, mixes, and masters the project himself. “I take a lot of pride in the fact that I made it myself,” he says, though he remains open to future collaborations with vocalists and instrumentalists. Now DJing regularly, he’s also begun designing tracks specifically for the dancefloor, testing multiple versions of A Moment in live sets before finishing it.

The single continues a floral visual identity shot entirely on film by photographer Claire Watson at the Botanic Gardens in Nelson, New Zealand – a deliberate move away from AI-generated art. “No AI art will ever be as meaningful as something captured in the real world.”

James has already taken the project worldwide, including a live show in London in June 2025.
