Niki Kennedy Releases Heartfelt Tribute ‘Gardenias’
NZ-born, Canada-based singer-songwriter Niki Kennedy pays a heartfelt tribute to her grandmother with today’s release of the beautiful and soulful ballad, Gardenias.
One of Niki’s most personal songs yet, Gardenias reflects the vulnerability and journey of grief, the joy of memory and the beauty of whānau. It not only showcases Niki’s powerful vocals, but also her talent as a songwriter and ability to connect with listeners on a deep level.
“Gardenias is about my most favourite person in the universe – my grandma. It took me over a decade to write a song about her, as I never quite knew how best to honour her memory in a way that led with joy instead of grief,” says Niki.
“What I love most about this song is that it reminds me of my grandma and that she deserves to be celebrated. I hope it connects with and brings a little peace to others who have lost people they love.”
Gardenias sets the scene for the release of Niki’s debut album The Space In Between (out in October), which explores themes of home, identity, and belonging.

“The album is a journey of reconnection through culture, nature, and story, integrating Polynesian elements into contemporary roots music,” says Niki. Through music, she shares openly, hoping listeners feel seen, heard, and held.
Gardenias sits on the record alongside the already released songs I Don’t Think About You (watch the video Here) and Revolution.
