An Entrance into Jazz-House: batbatGoose Releases ‘The Way You Move’
batbatGoose (bbG) is a dance/electronic project from Wellington, New Zealand, by James Battersby. The project is shaped by a deep-rooted love of indie rock and a growing obsession with the energy and groove of dance music.
Over time, James’ inspiration emerged through the lo-fi house movement, sparked by artists like Ross From Friends, and later expanded through the colourful, genre-blurring worlds of Barry Can’t Swim and Joy Anonymous. Rather than leaving his indie roots behind, bbG reimagines them in a new context.
For The Way You Move James has been inspired by Jazz House artists, with particular reference to Berlioz, Chaos in the CBD, and Wellington local producer Bari.
“The track is a combination of samples and parts I recorded myself. I recorded the main keys and some guitar licks on my Fender Strat. I found the vocal sample and just loved the tone of the voice for the track.
I think sampling is awesome and love to see how creative producers can get with samples, even when using the same ones. But I always love to record something unique on all my tracks to put my own sound on them.”
James has already taken the bbG project internationally, including a live show in London in June 2025.
bbG has received early support from Rolling Stones Aus/NZ, Apple Music ‘New in Dance’ and ‘New Music Daily’ playlists and appears frequently on the Wellington club DJ scene. In late December 2026, he’ll be gracing the stage at Le Currents music festival in Taupō, NZ.
