DUN Records + Bunchy’s Big Score & Dolly Possum Present ‘2EPs’

Continuing on the pathway of offering up excellent Ōtepoti artists to a wider audience, and ensuring fledgling yet extremely talented bands get to new levels, DUN002 – 2EPs is announced, as a vinyl release, and also something we haven’t done before…

First let’s back track little:

DUN Records Natasha Griffiths says: “Like anyone else who came across it, when I heard Bunchy’s Big Score Oscar Says I couldn’t get it out of my head. Then I fell in love with the album Wanda’s Bicycle. It seems a bit mad to ask a band to make an EP while they are releasing an album. Yet EPs are an exciting capture of a moment in time. When 4EPs came up, a number of the artists were midway through or focusing on an album, they were pulled out of the zone and went into an EP land with a deadline and a group of contemporaries doing the same thing.

If those EPs hadn’t been made then songs like Skyscrapers or Redacted, There’s An FBI Office In Wellington or Ferrets wouldn’t exist. So while it seemed a little crazy, it was also, wow what will a Bunchy’s EP sound like right on the back of that band making Wanda’s Bicycle, let’s find out”.

“This time, it’s like we were just being a band and playing songs rather than agonising over how each instrument
sounded, and whether it sounded too busy or empty. I think there were a lot more laughs too.” – Bunchy’s Big Score

“Bunchy’s were thrown in the deep end and off they went. So then I was thinking about what Keira Wallace was up to. I have known Keira since they were 13, and I have always thought of them as an extraordinary artist. I mentioned the idea to Tane (Sivle Talk / I’m Sivle Talk’s mum / Sivle Talk is one of my creative advisors) and he said Keira ’s band Dolly Possum had played a live to air on Radio One the night before and I should listen to that and also I should release that band. He was right. A reasonably new act, Dolly Possum were, yes, part way through making an album. Again, they veered off to make an EP. Again, I love EPs, they capture a moment that an album doesn’t, there is a slight chaos, and urgency, especially with generous yet firm timelines!”

“It was awesome to have the incentive to get so much material recorded back to back, especially as a somewhat new band. It made us really efficient at writing and recording songs together.” – Dolly Possum

The result is 2EPs a beautiful, unexpected record, with two bands that may appear like polar opposites, yet the more you listen, you will notice the serendipity.

And then there are the albums. Two phenomenal albums, which ultimately were going to be criminally under-heard. DUN Records’ releases have no rules, it is about seeing what the artist is up to and creating a complimentary release.

And also as a vinyl/double CD package (affordably) featuring Bunchy’s Big Score’s Good Friends and Wanda’s Bicycle, as well as Dolly Possum’s Hunting and Bandit. Each band with their own disc, featuring the EP and a “bonus album” rather than just a bonus track.

So every home can have a copy, in physical form, the way it should be.

Pre-orders open Thursday September 24th, exclusively via Ōtepoti’s Relics Music.
