Sophie-Maude Steps Into Her Power with ‘Be Something’

Tauranga-based singer and songwriter Sophie-Maude is stepping into her power as one of Aotearoa’s most promising young pop acts, with her second single of the year, Be Something.
A slice of pop perfection, Be Something captures the flirty, yet fleeting feeling of a summer fling, all the while showcasing Sophie-Maude’s diverse vocal range and talent for storytelling, big notes and topline complexity.
Drenched in youthful nostalgia, with hints of mischief and fun, it marks a subtle shift in sound and style for Sophie-Maude:
“It feels as though I’m moving from a younger G-rated aesthetic, into something more grounded, real, and reflective of me as I grow into womanhood. It carefully balances the life lessons I’ve learned so far, while also honouring my youth with playful wanderlust,” she says.
Co-written with Nic Martin (Devilskin) and produced by Nathan Sowter, Sophie-Maude wrote and recorded Be Something in her hometown of Mount Maunganui next to the beach and daydreaming about long summer days. “I visualised this song playing amongst balmy nights in the city, playing in nightclubs after making new connections.”
This feeling is perfectly captured in the song’s video, directed by Theo Vila; produced by Judah Jackson; starring actor Billy Cox and Sophie-Maude’s close friends Kate and Wyatt. The video chronicles the adventures of four young adults, who meet during a night out in Auckland quickly sparking a fleeting romance where they explore the city before parting ways as the sun begins to rise.
Be Something is Sophie-Maude’s second release this year, following on from the highly infectious pop banger Hotel Lobby.
