Has New Zealand Forgotten How To Make Pop Stars?

Has pop become too afraid to be spectacular? Auckland-based duo Iveta & Simone are posing a louder question with their new original dance-pop single Raya-Raya, arriving worldwide today, Friday, 16 October 2026 through DRM / The Orchard. Their artistic wager is unapologetic: two frontwomen, big melodic hooks and a visual world designed to feel like an event – not background music.
The partnership has an unexpected beginning. Bulgarian-born Iveta and New Zealand-born Simone met through an Auckland audition for a girl band, then went on to build their own duo. Rather than choosing a permanent lead singer and a supporting voice, Iveta & Simone put both performers at the centre. In Raya-Raya, the spotlight changes hands through the recurring ‘Turn it up’ and ‘Take me high’ exchanges before the voices come together in the chorus.
The official music video takes that musical tension into a stylised industrial performance world, moving from stark monochrome and shadow into warmer projected colour. The track’s central theme is inner power; its presentation reflects a bigger ambition for theatrical, visually distinctive original pop.
The duo appeared as Special Guests at the Miss New Zealand 2026 Grand Final. Raya-Raya has already received advance international editorial coverage from Taste It Daily. Reviewing the duo’s earlier single Corazon in February 2023, Muzic.NZ writer Jack Grabham described that song as ‘commercial dynamite’ – a review of Corazon, not of the forthcoming Raya-Raya.
There is also an industry debate behind the new recording: generative Suno tools contributed to its musical production, while Iveta and Simone recorded their own human lead vocals and human professionals completed the final mix and master. The duo can discuss what should remain human, what technology can contribute, and why the performance itself remains central to their artist identity.
