Since its release, songs from Gina Malcolm’s debut album First Rodeo have been played on Australia and New Zealand radio, as well as internationally on shows such as The International Americana Music Show – broadcast on more than 50 American public radio stations and on various global, online radio stations. The album has received strong reviews in Rhythms magazine, The Listener magazine, Country Music News International, and Americana UK.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Gina has returned to the studio to record a new batch of songs destined for her forthcoming new EP. The tracks were recorded at Sublime Studios in Waitaki, NZ and produced by Tom Maxwell.

Gina was thrilled to again work with musicians Tom Maxwell (electric and acoustic guitars), Elmore Jones (drums, guitar, piano), Rob P Murphy (bass) and Steve Harrop (organ). Joining them on the new recordings was Dave Khan, one of NZ’s most well-known live and session musicians, who has worked with (among many others) Reb Fountain, Marlon Williams, and The Veils. Dave is the one responsible for the wonderful 12-string electric playing on this new single, Lovin’ Company.

“To play with a band of this calibre, is an absolute dream for a songwriter!” says Gina.

Starting with the nostalgic Mr Whippy ice cream van version of Greensleeves, Lovin’ Company possesses a  punchy and sophisticated indie rock and jangle pop sound, despite the melancholic lyrics about loneliness.

“I wrote it while walking on Sumner Beach in Christchurch,” explains Gina. “There was literally a sign stating ‘The Ice Cream Shed is closed’. It was autumn and I got hit with this strong, sad, end-of-summer emotion and a longing for the closeness of a likeminded human.”

Guitars sparkle and shine over the push-and-pull rhythm section as Gina repeats the super-catchy melodic chorus – “I can’t find lovin’ company.”
