EP Review: Lose Myself

Abby Wolfe’s Lose Myself collects three previously released singles alongside the all-new titular track into an empowered EP, blending sweet acoustics with vibrant pop into a distinctive debut for the Dunedin-raised pop artist.

Enthralling opener Lose Myself boasts credits from heavyweights like Djeisan Suskov, Nik Brinkman, Ciaran McMeeken, and Ambian & Sleo, thanks to its creation at APRA Songhubs. It’s an exposed track driven by plucked acoustic guitar and mellow pop production, serving as the EP’s strongest in terms of identifying Wolfe’s signature sound. 

Streaming giant Held by You shines light upon Wolfe’s intense emotion, in a heartfelt piano-led ballad exploring the complicated feelings of a confused romantic relationship, which peaks in Wolfe’s stunning belted final chorus. Free Falling offers a vocal performance reminiscent of Dua Lipa but with subtler, calmer production elements, whilst Take It Slow captures an especially groovy vibe on its head-bopping chorus, featuring fun guitars, smooth vocal layering and catchy percussion. 

Lyrically, each song is honest and clear, although Wolfe perhaps play it too safe with traditional phrases and mainstream tropes. The mysterious EP artwork beautifully encapsulates the song’s themes of identity, in relation to self and others, as well as visually representing the music’s auditory glow.
