Single Review: Only Yesterday

Psyrok & Li’l Sister Jen aka (LSJ) have put out a new single titled Only Yesterday. 

Psyrok is a Trip Hop producer from Wellington and Little Sister Jen aka (LSJ) is a vocalist from Sweden. The Duo collaborate over the internet and according to a review I read about the pair, they have never met in person.

Only Yesterday is a passive lullaby of down tempo Trip Hop with the kind of ambiance that might see you poring a warm bath and lighting some candles. Reminiscent of Massive Attack and Portishead, it’s the kind of tune that you could drift away with or fall asleep to. 

I don’t know anything about Trip Hop but I felt like the vocals stayed in the same low gear throughout the song. The song was missing an effective build in the music and a climax in the vocal melody and overall dynamics. There is a slight hook to the song but it’s not very strong. I liked the harmonies in the vocals and the production was ok, but it sounded like a home recording. 

All in all it’s a charming piece of music but for me it fell short of a track you would consider releasing as a single or standout track in a body of work.
