Goin’ Steady Album Review

Rewind a month or two back and you’ll feel like its summer all over again, with the new offering from Wellington favourite, Newtown Rocksteady and their second EP release Goin’ Steady.

Putting forth some sweet soulful mixes, you can hear the smooth blend that makes these Newtown locals a big name for some of NZ’s finest reggae roots and grooves.

Close your eyes and listen close because a very cool set of influences spew forth in some of the stand out tracks from this EP. The fourth track in Rhodesia 2 instantly catches your attention, when the cool rhythm of a keyboard solo cuts in among the mellow jam of trumpets. Its tone, very much Ray Manzerek of The Doors inspired, creates a subtle blend to some very chill dub.

Elsewhere, tracks like Something To Say and Red Dub have the head nodding appreciation that makes you want to move and lose yourself in the pulsing reggae rhythm.

Newtown RockSteady never fails to impress, with the unique craftsmanship that makes them Wellington’s best known secret. A lazy Sunday afternoon chill out album that will have you believing summer never left.
