Landmark is as a cool a collection of urban groovs as fair urban Christchurch is likely to see all year. Although Pacific Underground are better known of their theatre productions (Dawn Raids, Romeo & Tusi), this compilation recognises the musical contributions of the collective. Pos mavaega (producer), Tanya Muagututi’a, Freeworld, and Beats ‘n’ Pieces take the musical influences of urban America and localise them with topical lyrics and the occasional island instument or melody. The album covers all territories, from the Wonder-ish funk on Warning to the tropical rhythms of [Song for Grandma] Ukulele; the hip hop attitude of Credentials to the R’n’B sway of Pure Love. And as a bonus, tracks are interspersed with comedy team The Naked Samoans taking the proverbial. A great compilation of current sounds – but copies are limited. It is available from PO Box 3934, Christchurch or Galaxy Records – Sharon McIver
