Dadamoog is an independent electronic music artist and producer based in Auckland, Aotearoa – one of the country’s most distinctive voices in IDM, downtempo, and experimental electronica.
Born in the USSR and raised in Siberia, the artist’s musical journey began unexpectedly early. Alone at home as a small child, he would sit in front of an old tube-amp Radiola with a turntable, working through his parents’ record collection – Roxy Music, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, David Bowie, and on the classical side Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Mahler. At seven, his mother enrolled him in a Siberian music school where he spent two years studying violin. He moved to New Zealand in 2001, and has been building the Dadamoog project independently in Auckland ever since.
The name encodes the philosophy in two words: DaDa – the avant-garde art movement’s playful rejection of convention – and Moog, the synthesiser at the heart of the sound. The result is music that sits between IDM, downtempo, EDM, and what Dadamoog calls kin-dza-jazz and electronic deviant mantras: MOOG-inspired, headphone-optimised, built in BITWIG. A creative pivot came after stumbling on a Brian Eno interview on YouTube – Eno’s ideas about randomness, accident, and letting music lead rather than controlling every detail reshaped the Dadamoog approach entirely. Music that refuses genre categories, described by listeners as “synthpop that was never this psychedelic” and “reminiscent of Deep Forest and Delerium.”
Dadamoog blends electronic dance music, downtempo and abstract synthetic textures into a surrealist, genre-bending sound – an atmosphere, an invitation to dwell in unique Moon soundscapes where technology and emotion coalesce. Indie Music Artists wrote that the project is “certainly thrusting New Zealand electronic music into the spotlight”, with a sound design “both personal and universal, deeply connected to place and yet strikingly futuristic.” In his own words: “If you imagine electronic music getting lost in a dream and coming back slightly distorted but inspired… that’s pretty close to what it sounds like.”
The single Moon Call (2025) was born from a strange digital encounter – a Facebook message from an account that appeared to be Svein Berge from Röyksopp, saying he had found one of Dadamoog’s tracks interesting. A short exchange followed. Then silence. The identity of the sender was never resolved. That unanswered signal became the track. As Dadamoog describes it: “Kind of like a musical shout into the void inspired by a message that may or may not have been real.”
