Older

Older is the songwriting partnership between New Zealanders Jel Legg and Julie Legg. Jel Legg is originally from the UK having moved to NZ in the early 90’s.

The prolific songwriting duet are known for their unique blend of alternative rock – they are comfortable that they don’t really fit in any scene.

Ultimately hard to categorise, Older’s sound is influenced by 70’s Rock, 80’s New Wave, 90’s Britpop and some current Indie / Alternative Rock.

Their productions move effortlessly from stripped-back simplicity to complex arrangements with layers of beautiful vocal harmonies, all underpinned by catchy melodies, solid songwriting and a high-energy, attention-grabbing drive.

As of August 2025, they have released four albums: Selfie (August 2025), Human+ (November 2021), Unmasked (May 2024) and Silence (May 2019).

Older’s lyrics are thoughtful, often uplifting & positive, even at times anthemic, simply celebrating being alive. Equally they are observational, often casting a wry smile at life and its varied situations and characters. Personal freedom strongly underpins their worldview.

As composers their art is very much focused around the writing, recording and production process and they are happy to be known as a studio-based band. They have both been involved in music in one way or another for several decades. There have been several bands lost to time, albums produced for other artists, projects lit and extinguished however, Older represents the culmination of all their experience and is by far the work they are most proud of.

Older’s band symbol is linked to Jel’s Welsh ancestry and is inspired by the Celtic symbol for the Awen – loosely translated as ‘inspiration, particularly poetic’.

Jel and Julie live rurally surrounded by nature where, as ambiverts, they are happiest when away from the bustle of city life. They treasure the simple things in life and value people with interesting stories to tell or conversation to share.

Outside of music Julie is a published author, long-time NZ screen actor, podcaster, blogger, photographer and keeper of chickens. Jel gets lost in coding, running a recording studio, growing too many hedges, and, in a previous life, used to build space satellites and super cars.
