Adam Hattaway & The Haunters Release ‘Hot Variety Vol. 2’
Adam Hattaway and The Haunters return with Hot Variety Vol. 2, which is, would you believe, a follow up to last year’s Hot Variety.
And for fans of the OG Haunters, this one’s for you.
Hot Variety Vol. 2 features a stellar roll call of Haunters past and present, including Liam Quinn, Tess Liautaud, Holdyn Skinner, Sam White, Thomas Isbister and Elmore Jones. Recorded across three sessions and over two years, it’s a proper Haunters family affair, a record full of old friends, familiar sounds and a few surprises.
If you missed Hot Variety the first time around, now is the perfect opportunity to dive into both records together. Heard side by side, Hot Variety in full form. A deep, immersive, yet varied portrait of Adam Hattaway and The Haunters. Songs made over time, committed to tape and full of the spontaneity, humour and musical chemistry that has defined the band.
Although, as the title suggests, the record explores many musical worlds, songs like Country, sit right at the heart of the record. “I wanna live in the country, coz there’s nobody there” is clearly straightforward in its sentiment, yet is perfectly expressive and heartfelt in its simplicity. Other tracks that bridge elements of Haunters’ sounds between indie-rock and country tinged roots music like Your Love and Morning Fog sit alongside each other nicely with the band simmering away in a live setting underneath Hattaway bleating out more relatable yet quirky lines like ‘It’s got a name – it’s called your love’ and ‘Everybody has a place in everybody else’s heart”.
As the album was recorded over various sessions at Sublime over a 2 year period, these records are showcases of a band’s progression, delving into new styles alongside other records they’ve made, while retaining the heart of what makes them them. From the cinematic, desert land feel of The Sinner, to the out and out honkytonk of Honey Bee, it’s all there.
Coming exactly one year after HV vol. 2, The album arrives only a short time after War On Zevon, Hattaway’s Warren Zevon covers album. Hot V’s Focus track, Country is out on online streaming platforms alongside b-side Your Love accompanied by live music video filmed at Sublime Studio. The rest of the album is exclusively available on Bandcamp today.
