Ammonita Make Their Mark with Grunge-Fuelled Debut Single ‘Walnut’

Ōtepoti continues to turn out some of this country’s finest rock bands and emerging act Ammonita is living proof!
The alt-rockers have today released their debut single Walnut – a beautifully melancholic track that takes the listener on an emotional journey of longing.
“The song is about the pain of a long-distance relationship. We all wrote this song together, with Paige drawing the meaning of the song through her personal experiences and projecting that into the lyrics. Originally, we only had the name Walnut as a placeholder, because it reminded us of the song ‘Nutshell’ by Alice in Chains, but it ended up sticking,’ says the band, which is made up of Paige Sumner, Zoe Eckhoff, Iván Fernandez, Mason O’Connell and Karl Young.
Although this is Ammonita’s first official single, the band has been making waves on Dunedin’s rock scene for a few years now. And it’s their passion for live performance and the energy it generates that they’ve masterfully captured in Walnut.
“What we love most about Walnut is how much of the song was recorded in the moment. Little things we changed or added that entirely capture that period of time.”
Walnut is just a taster of what Ammonita has in store in the coming months, with a larger project still to be revealed. Fans of the alt-rockers can also expect to see show dates announced soon as they prepare to unleash their distinctive brand of alternative grunge to audiences across Aotearoa. Stay tuned!
