Anthonie Tonnon Announces ‘Cinematographer’ Tour + First New Music In Three Years
Taite Music Prize-winning songwriter Anthonie Tonnon today announces the international tour for his immersive new live show, Cinematographer, marking the beginning of a bold new creative chapter. Premiering this October, the ambitious audio-visual performance introduces an entirely new body of work, with fans getting their first taste today, as Tonnon releases his first new music in three years – the new single, Executive Assistant.
Audiences can join Anthonie’s mailing list to secure tickets in the presale via anthonietonnon.com from Wednesday 22 July at 10:00am. Tickets will then be available to the general public on Friday July 24 at 10:00am.
Three years in the making, Cinematographer combines live electronic music, cinematic storytelling and visual design into an immersive performance. Featuring visual DJing by Erica Sklenars, videography by Theo Taylor, styling by Karlya Smith and design by Daniel Alexander, the show sees Tonnon pushing his live performance into ambitious new territory.
“Cinematographer is part film, part francophile performance lecture, part disco club set,” says Tonnon. “It’s a world that we’ve built for this new music, exploring some of my great loves – the French avant-garde, cinema, urban politics of the 1960’s, turn-of-the-millennium dance music and documentary films, and the glorious, mystifying city of Whanganui.”
The Cinematographer tour will premiere in Auckland before travelling to Whanganui, Christchurch, Wellington – and then internationally to Melbourne and London. Following the headline dates, Tonnon will join The Veils for an 18-date tour across Europe and the UK throughout November and December 2026.
Ahead of the tour, Tonnon releases Executive Assistant on Tuesday 28 July, his first new music since the Taite Music Prize-winning Leave Love Out of This. Created alongside longtime collaborator and producer Jonathan Pearce (The Beths), the track introduces the sonic world of Cinematographer, blending chopped live-band recordings with acid basslines and four-on-the-floor rhythms inspired by late-90’s and early-2000’s DJ-driven pop music. The song was mixed by Bevan Smith (Introverted Dancefloor, Glass Vaults, The Beths).
“Executive Assistant was a breakthrough for Jon and I because it gave us the sound that everything else grew from,” says Tonnon. “As an experiment, I started cutting up recordings we’d made with the band and putting them back together in new ways. The result reminded me of the sample-heavy dance-pop I loved in the 2000’s. Jon suggested a squelchy acid bassline, and from there a whole new journey began.”
The single will be released alongside an official music video made with support from NZ On Air on 28 July. Directed by Kristy Pearson, with visual mixing by Erica Sklenars, cinematography by Theo Taylor, styling by Karlya Smith and design by Daniel Alexander, the video will be available as both a single edit and a seven minute extended mix visualiser.
