Marking a bold evolution in their sound, Scatterbrains retains the sun-drenched tones that define Daily J while embracing a deeper, more introspective edge. “‘The album’s title reflects that contrast,” the band explains. “Some songs are euphoric, others melancholic, some outright chaotic – it’s a rollercoaster of emotion, and we hope it resonates in a real way.”

Producer Joe Faris was at the helm of the album, working with Daily J in the evolution of their sound from their debut album Venus Ate Mars with the hit song Left Me Like Summer,’ to the new energy of today’s release. Still harnessing Daily J’s signature sound of vibrant surf guitar riffs and lush harmonies, Scatterbrains delves into some moments of darker and more ethereal undertones, with introspective lyrics exploring themes of disconnection, self-reflection, and the bittersweet nature of growing up.

The album’s lead single For Your Leisure captures this new energy; it’s darker verses are packed with momentum, opening up to an uplifting, catchy chorus bringing a fresh dynamic to the band’s sound and making it one of the most exciting tracks on the album. “For Your Leisure feels like it’s pushing us out of our comfort zone in the best way. It feels like a natural evolution for the band, and if all goes well, it could be a glimpse into where we’re headed next.”

With Scatterbrains lyrically digging deeper into who Daily J are as a band and also as individuals, For Your Leisure explores “finding light in the chaos – the lost nights, the reckless moments, and the search for something real in all the wrong places”, says the band. “It’s a song for anyone who’s ever felt adrift but still hopeful, caught between the thrill of the unknown and the longing for something deeper.”

All four singles each debuted in the Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles Chart, received spins from Radio Hauraki and Bay Rock, as well as earning coverage from the likes of Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Sniffers, NZ Herald and more.

To celebrate the album, Daily J are heading on their biggest Australasian tour to date.
