Written across a period of immense personal and creative growth, The Waiting Room captures the feeling of being stuck between where you are and where you hope to be. Through themes of heartbreak, healing, self-discovery and ambition, Elsden chronicles the moments when life feels paused, while reminding listeners that growth often happens in those in-between spaces.

“When I began recording music, I started to really notice the hustle culture embedded in music,” says Beth. “I felt this overwhelming pressure to start young and not waste any time. I remember thinking, ‘As long as I have my first single out by the time I’m 22, I’ll be happy.’ Looking back now, I realise how important it was to take the time to develop as an artist before releasing music.”

The EP’s opening track and namesake, Waiting Room, was born from that frustration. Serving as the project’s thesis statement, the song captures Elsden’s experience of feeling left behind while watching peers reach milestones in their careers, relationships and personal lives, as she spent countless hours writing, creating and refining her craft.

“I wrote the song to make sense of that purgatory feeling where I would watch everyone else accomplish goals, get into relationships, move up and move out while I stayed in my room working on my art,” she explains. “Then I looked back at all the songs we’d been producing and realised they were all about those moments in life where you don’t feel fulfilled – like you’re stuck in the waiting room.”

Produced by longtime collaborator Abby Wolfe and mixed and mastered by Emily Wheatcroft-Snape, The Waiting Room unfolds like a coming-of-age story. Beginning with Waiting Room – a meditation on ambition, patience and feeling stuck in life’s in-between moments – the EP moves through the unresolved heartbreak of Losing You Slow, the hesitant romantic spark of Catch Feelings, and the hard-earned gratitude of Peace Comes With It, before arriving at its powerful conclusion with Haunts You.

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Lizzy McAlpine and Maisie Peters while carving out a distinctly personal voice of her own, Beth Elsden has quickly emerged as one of Aotearoa’s most compelling new songwriting talents. Across The Waiting Room, she pairs sharp lyrical observations with emotional honesty, documenting the messy, beautiful process of becoming.

“I want the essence of The Waiting Room to be that the blooming stage of your life can still be magical,” she says. “Sort of like a coming-of-age movie, but in EP form. By the end of the record, I hope I sound like I’ve found my voice and that I’m ready to come out swinging and take life by the reins.”

With The Waiting Room, Beth Elsden delivers a confident debut statement – a soundtrack for anyone navigating life’s uncertain chapters, and proof that sometimes the waiting can be just as important as the arrival.
