Bigpop Records Release – Evening is Youth ‘I’m Glad I Left’
Evening is Youth, an act characterised by a paradoxical mix of intensity and aloofness, unveil their latest single, I’m Glad I Left.
The band’s second single balances themes of optimism and pessimism, reflecting the contradictory alchemy that dictates our thoughts and actions. Accompanied by a video directed by Connor himself, I’m Glad I Left asks enough questions to keep listeners up at night.
The trio’s eccentric collection of inspirations pulls from a vast history of post punk, shoegaze, and indie electronica, forming a broad sound connected by authenticity and a legacy of counterculture. “Having a vast range of sounds is more interesting to us than being just a rock band,” says frontman Connor Robinson-Pierce.
If there’s one word to describe Evening is Youth, it’s defiance. The band, like their inspirations before them, refuses to conform. The troublesome trio of Connor Robinson-Pierce, Luke Lattimore, and Jack Collin even prefer to refrain from letting let their music dictate a listeners’ reaction or point of view. “A song is only yours until it’s heard by others, it shouldn’t have one meaning,” says Connor. “We aren’t trying to tell anyone what to think. We aren’t Kid Rock.”
Though ambiguous, each track is woven from the adolescent anxieties that define modern youth. Identity, mental health, and self realisation are persistent themes throughout I’m Glad I Left and, for that matter, every track on their upcoming EP. “Everything that has ever happened to us has informed our music,” says Connor. “Fucking up, making terrible decisions. It always informs the music.”
Self-reflective in its approach, those anxieties embody the band’s outlook on music. “Being musicians was, in a way, an excuse to not have a clear career path,” says Connor. In that sense, Evening is Youth is just as much inspired by the aimlessness of youth as it is by its musical predecessors.
