In a burst of late summer activity – possibly brought on by heatstroke, we just don’t know – Capital Recordings have signed two of the most exciting acts in New Zealand music today: Auckland three-piece Die! Die! Die! and Wellington one-piece Disasteradio.

Disasteradio is a band consisting of Luke Rowell (b. 1983) and Computer. Since the acquisition of the first family computer (the venerable Commodore 64) at age 6, Luke has been fascinated with the possibilities of synthesized sound combined with pop melody, inspired by the many game soundtrack composers.

Disasteradio is, according to Luke, “an attempt at creating electronic music that, unlike most popular dance music, is evocative and sudden while embodying a backdrop of new wave pastiche, tongue-in-cheek modernism and themes of camp science”, an excellent call in our opinion.

Die! Die! Die! are some heavy-duty action. Formed in November 2003, Die! Die! Die! quickly bought a van and started playing as many shows in as many towns as they could. After two tours of New Zealand, Die! Die! Die! supported legendary UK punk band Wire at their only New Zealand show.

After a brief break-up they secured the current line-up of Andrew Wilson on guitar and vocals, Michael Prain on drums and Henry Oliver on bass guitar, and embarked on a third national tour. With five Tours of New Zealand and three of Australia (including both Homebake and Meredith festivals, and a support slot for Franz Ferdinand) under their belt, Die! Die! Die! leave New Zealand in next month for an extensive tour of the USA – where they will record their debut album with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Shellac) at his studio Electrical Audio in Chicago, before heading to the UK, Sweden, and wherever else they can find shows.

Expect a debut album from Disasteradio in April and a debut EP from Die! Die! Die! next month.
