Electric Tapestry Announce Tour Dates

After performing in almost every venue in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, space-rock five-piece Electric Tapestry are finally leaving the familiar stages of Wellington to embark on a three day tour. “It’s a mini, lower North-Island tour – a weekend of gigging, but really, it’s just a chance to hang out with your friends and play the music we love,” says Nick Clark, guitarist and vocalist for the band.

The band have also begun recording their debut album after four EPs, having recently tracked drums with Adult Friends’ Jackson Kidd at Ragdoll Recordings, a yet to be opened recording studio in the heart of the Wellington CBD. “The album will be a mixture of real drums, samples drums and electronic drums providing percussion, but eventually, all songs will be played live. Volker, our drummer, is pretty adaptable,” Clark says.

The three dates will include Rosemary’s in Taupo, The Cabana in Napier, and Porridge Watson in Whanganui. “The biggest night will be The Cabana, as that’s for the Tenth Anniversary of The Royal Variety Show, which is a bit of local institution now. As well as live music, there’s Stars in Their Eyes performances going on between acts. It’s pretty full on.” This year the show is dedicated to Michael McGruddy, a Hawkes Bay musician who passed away earlier this year but who regularly performed at previous Royal Variety Shows with his Tool tribute band, Insecure Delusion.

Electric Tapestry will play with Auckland indie-pop band Capricore, who they’ve played with twice before, and Wellington heavy rock band The Favoured, who they are planning more shows with once they both return home. The range of genres on offer at The Cabana extends to all dates, with the band playing with Skarpakazoo (ska), Eastown Music Association (chill yacht rock), Total Disarray (groove metal), Dirty Mike (rap), Flowback (reggae) and Down with The System (a local System of A Down tribute act). However, Electric Tapestry will themselves fit into this assortment of styles well as their own sound is multifaceted, combining elements from pop, alternative, heavy metal and grunge. “I guess it all comes from having so many different tastes in the band, somehow we make it all work, even if one of the three guitarists just uses effects for one song – sometimes, underplaying, like playing a drone for a whole verse, can sound bigger than everyone trying to jump on a riff.”

Electric Tapestry’s debut is due out this year.
