Originally released in 2024, Phases collated Em’s EPs “Tender” and “Cloud City”, with additional tracks to make the album. Em is now introducing three previously unfinished tracks to complete the narrative in 2026. The album’s continuous creation draws on Em’s growth as an artist, passion for her production craft, and her reflective process. “The album is cyclic,” Em says, “a representation of my internal journey and how it evolves over time.” This project sees Em exploring themes of grief, self-discovery, and emotional resilience.
The single Later, originally developed in 2024 with Luan Meaker, and completed in 2026 with Arahi Whaanga and Joshua Worthington-Church, is rooted in the themes and sounds of the Phases record, but shows a glimmer of Em’s succeeding album Move. Similarly, visuals by Ali Burns reference the Phases era while pushing Em into a new visual space. “Later is a return to self, a reminder to be gentle through healing, and a mantra to keep going on my journey.”
“This release feels like the perfect next step of the process. Songs written during the Phases era with a sound informed from my growth during Move., working with original visuals and new aesthetics from new friends.”
