Flying Nun signs the Shocking Pinks

It is with pleasure that Flying Nun Records announce the signing of the band known as The Shocking Pinks who are set for the release of their second album ‘Mathematical Warfare’, scheduled for release on February 28th.

The band originate from Christchurch, which is co-incidentally the birthplace of Flying Nun Records and has also been home to many other Flying Nun bands including The Bats, Bailter Space, Loves Ugly Children and Jean-Paul Sartre Experience.

Upon landing in Auckland last week to hand over the album masters & artwork to his new record company, Nick Harte (the lynchpin for The Shocking Pinks) was heard to exclaim “….now give me all the Loves Ugly Children back catalogue, you horse’s arse!”, thus immediately settling into a solid working relationship and also emphatically proving that he knows about a good tune or two.

Actually, he knows 18 good tunes – that is how many you’ll find on the forthcoming album ‘Mathematical Warfare’. A video has been produced for ‘Emily’ and you’ll see this on TV very, very soon, if not now. Why not now?

Nick has described the sound of Shocking Pinks as ‘post-disco-dreampop-miserabilism’, which should lie to rest any fears or apprehensions of the pigeon-holers out there. To be honest, it’s more of a cross between late-period Fleetwood Mac and My Bloody Valentine, but who can tell in this unseasonable weather?

For the rest of us, we’re going to enjoy this summer, as The Shocking Pinks build up their collection of live shows in the lead-up to the release of the refreshing new album, that incorporates elements and layers of vocals, keyboards, drums, acoustic & electric guitars and feedback.
