Hawke’s Bay artist JAKE returns with reflective new single, ‘Podium’

Up and coming Hawke’s Bay artist JAKE is back with a raw new single Podium, out today. Chill in it’s R’n’B-infused indie pop vibes, the track is an honest take on the ups and downs of confidence and uncertainty.

Held down by a reflective and sparse electric guitar, the hip hop inspired beat is matched by a melancholic vocal feel, with lyrics exploring the complex yin and yang of self-belief and doubt.

“Podium is about trusting your gut and backing yourself,” explains JAKE. “It’s too easy to look around and compare, which causes us to overthink shit. This is the song I use as my reminder when I am doubting myself, to not stress over the small things.”

After lacking in inspiration for a few weeks, JAKE recording the initial basis for the song at his shed in the Hawke’s Bay,

“I sat down to write some music after not writing or recording for a solid month,” revealed JAKE. “I kept overthinking and doubting everything, so when I heard the beat for Podium I made the decision to just let it all come to me naturally and not think too much.”

The single was then completed alongside acclaimed producer and mixing engineer Simon Gooding.

“A few months later I was attending a music hub session that was held here in Hawke’s Bay, and I turned up early one day. I ended up playing Simon my demo for Podium and he was keen to help me get this song polished up and released,” says JAKE.

The release of Podium comes shortly after JAKE’s highly-anticipated debut release, Waiting List, which was supported by The Edge and ZM radio, George FM, as well as Sniffers. Keep an ear out for more things to come from this exciting new Kiwi artist!
