Helium Project Releases New EP ‘Rino Tangi (Steel that Sings)’
Helium Project is proud to announce the release of a stunning new three-track EP titled Rino Tangi (Steel that Sings) – a collection of compositions born from the group’s recent immersive show The Sound of Steel. The EP is available today, 31 October, 2025 on all major streaming platforms.
At the heart of Rino Tangi is the visionary collaboration between composer Nick Edgar and designer/musician Gary Hunt, whose exquisitely handcrafted steel percussion instruments inspired the project. These sonic sculptures made by Hunt, a veteran steel fabricator and former drummer of punk icons The Terrorways, blend industrial craftsmanship with musical artistry.
Each piece weaves the raw tonal resonance of steel with lush layers of strings, synths, beats, and in the case of Hina, also voice. The result is a sonic landscape that invites listeners to experience steel as they never have before.
“These instruments aren’t just percussion – they’re sculptures that sing,” says Edgar. “Composing with them opened up a whole new musical palette. We wanted to let their metallic voice be both the anchor and the launchpad.”
The release follows Helium Project’s recent sell-out performances accompanying Gary Hunt’s Sounds of Steel exhibition at Devonport’s DEPOT, a multisensory event where sight and sound collided in a stunning display of industrial artistry and musical exploration.
About Gary Hunt
From punk roots in the late ’70s to internationally recognized steel interiors and furniture design, Gary Hunt’s unique career merges sound, sculpture, and engineering. For decades, he has been working with steel including creating functional percussion instruments that double as museum-worthy artworks – pushing the boundaries of what instruments can be and how they’re experienced.
