Sink into your frequency with You I Saw, the latest single from Auckland-based experimental trio Impostor Syndrome. Out March 7, this single offers a glimpse into their upcoming sophomore album, Sleep & Violence, a genre-bending exploration of anxiety and neurodivergence.

“The seed of the song—the guitar chords themselves—originated from incorrectly playing Ellie’s guitar in the Last of Us 2 game,” says Shannon Coulomb, producer and multi-instrumentalist.

Combining luscious 12-string acoustic guitars, resonant percussion, and morphing synthesizers, You I Saw builds on the sonic foundation established in the band’s previous release, See Everything. The track was the final piece written and recorded for the new album, coming together quickly with its subtle nods to Smashing Pumpkins’ 1979 and Collective Soul’s The World I Know. Orchestral synthesizers further enhance the emotional arc, making You I Saw a standout in the narrative of Sleep & Violence.

Sleep & Violence, the band’s self-produced sophomore album, explores the tension between chaos and calm across its concise 23-minute runtime. Coulomb, alongside vocalist Ryan Culleton and drummer Scott Nicolson, recorded the album with a love for analogue soundscapes and an eye for textural depth. A follow-up to their debut album Oriens, Sleep & Violence reflects the band’s growth while maintaining their raw, unfiltered creative ethos.
