Instant Fantasy is the solo project of Ōtautahi based multidisciplinary artist and music Gemma Syme.

For nearly two decades Gemma has been shapeshifting through genre, performing in groups Trimasterbate, Holiday with Friends, 47 Diamantes, Diana Rozz, Fantasing, Femscrem and Stonehenge Aotearoa. Syme is a prolific collaborator, writing and featuring on tracks with Shocking Pinks, Glass Vaults, Dominic Hoey or Junus Orca and remixing tracks for Chelsea Jade, Indi and Introverted Dancefloor. Instant Fantasy teamed up with Sunreturn in 2025 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Wet EP and to release Emocean, her first new song in over a decade.

Throughout 2026 Syme stayed busy with releases from dORKWIND (featuring members or Cortina and Golden Axe), Stonehenge Aotearoa and Whakawhitia (a collaborative performance of Ariana Tikao and Nicolas Woollaston at the Tinyfest). She also launched the Original Material Podcast, where Syme interviews musicians about their formative musical experiences.

Rounding out the year Syme has announced The Wet EP Remixes, where Karl Sölve Steven, Junus Orca, Tender Moonlight, The Short Shorts and Yvois remix and recontextualise Syme’s solemn originals into spirited, synthesised soundscapes. In anticipation of the EP’s December 4 release date, Instant Fantasy has shared the leading single I’ve Given Up On You (Yvois Remix).

INSTANT FANTASY – THE WET EP REMIXES
Pre-order

Yvois is the musican project of Ivy Rossiter, a Berlin-based NZ producer of warm, wonky beats and singer of moody aural treats. She is also the founder of Éclat Crew Berlin – a collective of female*, trans and non-binary electronic music producers. With a heavy 4 to the floor kick, verbed vocal chops and subtle synthesised key changes Yvois transforms Syme’s bereft original about the grief of an ending relationship into a celebration of the release, renewal and unexpected freedom that follows.

“Ivy was the first person I toured with as Instant Fantasy (with Tourettes AKA Dominic Hoey),” reminisces Syme. “We lived together in Lyttelton for a while, and we have always kept in touch.”

“One time when she was over for New Years we wrote a song during the night and it was really fun. She was working for Ableton in Berlin at the time (one session with her was like watching 100,000 YouTube tutorials) and I also remember seeing her perform one of her sets on Youtube and it was so beautiful and heartfelt and emotional. I knew she would do the song right, and she smashed it.”

“I have a habit of hanging onto relationships far past their best before date, so the sentiment and emotion behind I’ve Given Up On You speaks directly to my soul.” states Yvois.

“Gemma’s original track feels firmly rooted in the grief and pain of that moment of reckoning, and I wanted to evoke the other side of that coin, the liberating joy and ecstasy of the moment when you’re finally free from someone who you’ve spent far too much of yourself on. We think of giving up as something negative; but giving up on someone or something can be one of the most empowering, self-affirming choices we can make for ourselves.”

“I used a lot of Gemma’s gorgeous original vocals, the pianos, the organ, some of the original percussion sounds, but I added some mallets and chimes and some lush granular pads, which are some of my favourite kinds of sounds.”

“I feel excited for the remix to meet the world. I hope there’s someone out there in the thick of leaving something that’s bad for them who’ll listen to the original and the remix back-to-back and feel like maybe everything’s going to be okay.”

I’ve Given Up On You (Yvois Remix) is available now on all streaming services. Pre-order The Wet EP Remixes via Instant Fantasy’s Bandcamp. Watch Yvois interviewed by Gemma Syme on episode one of the Original Material podcast.
