The album was completed right before Joseph and his young family moved to Europe. Over five days at Parachute Studios in Auckland, and with no time for second guessing – the record is Thompson’s most honest work to date.

Prior to this he had spent years touring with his wife as Joseph & Maia, before stepping back from music to open a pizzeria in New Zealand and raise his two daughters.

Across the album, Thompson draws on two decades of life and music, with songs about restlessness, old habits and the urge to start again. Sonically the songs represent a fusion of folk, country and pop tied together with tasteful textures and clever musicianship.

“I just never felt like it was mine,” he says of the life he left behind.  I Don’t Belong Here is out now.
