Lucy Gray Releases New Single ‘The Bug’
Lucy Gray’s The Bug is an introspective, bubbly yet grungey song. Despite its sample heavy, plastic quality it’s still melodic and incredibly repeatable. The lyrics lean heavily on the story-telling language Gray has built through their years as a singer-songwriter, and rings true of nostalgia and coming of age. The Bug sets the scene in the opening line in the year 2017; it’s about the challenges of growing up in the digital world.
They started sharing a clip online of it which quickly gained over 60K views: “2017 I can hear myself breathing, sweating on the floor, still staring at the ceiling. Music so loud I can feel my ears bleeding, if I stay awake, yeah I think it stops the feeling.”
In the last 2 years, Gray has grown an audience of nearly 100K on social media platforms combined, supporting international acts both in Auckland and in Australia, and now headlining their own Australia tour. All at just 19.
Gray wrote the song using the idea of a physical sickness like a “bug” to describe a mental illness, specifically the experience growing up with OCD. A theme that has been prevalent in their music dating back to their earliest EP in 2024.
“It’s the best way I’ve been able to describe it because it feels just like a parasite, and I’ve heard that sentiment shared so much between myself and other people, especially in hearing the song.”
This single marks the second-to-last single dropped from their upcoming project releasing in October. The project will be supported by an NZ + AUS tour in Nov/Dec of this year. Gray recently supported Australian duo 2charm at Double Whammy, and previously Australian artist Holly Hebe at The Tuning Fork.
