Fresh from wowing audiences at NZ’s leading music summit Going Global, and opening for Keli Holiday (Peking Duk) in Auckland, Sam is now gearing up for the release of his self-titled debut album – out Friday November 7.
Today’s release of Home To You gives fans a feel for what’s in store on the record. Heavily inspired by classic rock and Americana influences, with an uptempo, driving beat and jangly guitars, Home To You is a feelgood tune, which explores the shift from adolescence to adulthood – a theme, which runs throughout Sam’s upcoming album.
Joining Sam on the track is UK-born, Auckland-based artist Brody Leigh, who first came to attention in the sibling act Brody and Ben.
“Brody and I wrote this in an hour on the first writing session we ever did together. The two of us, a guitar, in a little apartment studio in central Auckland. It kind of blindsided both of us and we’re both incredibly proud of it. I began producing it the following week and over the next month built it up with live drums, saxophone, strings, and some blood sweat and tears getting it to hit the way we wanted,” says Sam.
The video for Home To You, directed by Hugo Wallace, captures a sense of “home” and is shot across Auckland in locations that will be familiar to many, including Cornwall Park and the CBD.
“They’re all great locations in the 09 and they reflect the longing and recollection of special times and places,” says Sam.
It has been a massive year for Sam, who returned with new music back in June, with the single That Somebody’s You, which spent 5 weeks on the Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles Chart and peaked at #11 on the NZ Radioscope Chart and #64 All Airplay Radioscope Chart. He followed it up with the rock infused Don’t Leave Me Alone.
Both songs will sit alongside Home To You on the album, which Sam will be touring in late 2025 and early 2026. The debut album tour kicks off in Arrowtown on November 21 and winds up in Christchurch on January 30.
