Sugar James Releases New Single, 'just Me'

Hot off the success of their fundraising project 4 Tha Cause, Ōtautahi based Aotearoa Independents Collective, Capgun Corp present the first single and title track from rapper and producer, Sugar James’ debut album, Just Me.

The heavily lyrical track dives into the mechanisms behind keeping his mind in check during the creation process. A deep but highly receivable articulation, it presents not only an insight into Sugar’s positive manifestations, but also a neutral offering of advice for artists who may need some of their own. “In a nutshell, it’s just me breaking down my own mental process during the creation phase, and at the same time installing new methods of working around my advertisties”. Coupled with a true boom bap beat, dreamy piano samples lead into the filtered out verses where his vocals take centre stage. The song progresses to combine elements from the intro and verses to form the hook.

Although one of the last songs written for his upcoming album, Just Me heavily influenced the style the album would be in its completion. “As soon as the beat started to take shape, I realised I’d tuned into a new found sense of neutralness. This then steered me towards writing the lyrics in a way that I thought was most receivable, and then I was so attached to that notion that it became the theme for the album.”

Callan O’Connor aka Sugar James, alongside the other members in Capgun Corp; TZ, Lonesome Carboy, Necrum Select and Larry D, have had a cracker start to the year performing at Twisted Frequency alongside the likes of Diggy Dupē, and selling out seated shows despite the Covid-19 restrictions wreaking havoc across the New Zealand arts sector.

Recently the group have celebrated the success of their 4 Tha Cause fundraising campaign where, in conjunction with the live event, they released an eleven-track compilation album on Bandcamp. Where supporters were treated to a sneak peak at Just Me before it’s official release – all money from the event and the album went straight to 298 Youth Health, a free local service for young people.

4 Tha Cause is available here on Bandcamp

Expect to hear a lot more from Sugar James in the near future, with both his own self-made album on the horizon and a collective body of work from the Capgun Crew due out later this year.
