Welcomer debut with ‘Cicadas 3’

Wellington’s Welcomer are stoked to be releasing their debut single Cicadas 3.

Despite having not yet released any recordings, Welcomer have already garnered a reputation for poignant live shows. It’s not a surprise given the experience this band holds collectively. The 5-piece, centred around main songwriter Miles Sutton, write intricate, raw and beautiful pop songs.

Miles begins Cicadas 3 with the melancholic and wry couplet ‘break up, down, either way you’re losing friends’. The verse continues over gliding and glistening guitar and synth, before swooning into a duet chorus with Shannen Petersen (guitar, backing vocals). The song chews over forgiveness and blame, and not being able to let go, but it is itself a release.

The weight of memory continues as one of the core concepts of Welcomer’s upcoming EP (due out later in 2022). Recorded both at home and at The Stomach in Palmerston North, the EP features collaboration with several other Papaiti Records artists. For Cicadas 3, Tharushi Bowatte from Recitals provides horns, and James Stuteley of Carb on Carb provides samples. Sit back and let Cicadas 3 wash over you.
