Whaia te maramatanga – Rob Thorne album launch

Victoria University Press and Rattle Records warmly invite you to the launch of Whaia te maramatanga, the debut album of Rob Thorne.

Rob is a new and original voice in the evolution of taonga pūoro. A disciple of Richard Nunns, he had 25 years’ experience in the alternative band scene before reaching out to his Ngati Tumutumu heritage and immersing himself in the study of traditional Māori instruments.

Whaia te maramatanga, ‘seeking after knowledge’, is the result of this diverse experience. Using modern loop technology and traditional Māori flutes and horns made from stone, bone, shell and wood, Rob creates a transcendent aural experience that blends the ancient and the modern seamlessly – a deeply felt and highly concentrated conversation between the present and the past.

A short concert will be followed by refreshments.
