Some good things can come out of bad situations; such is the case with Whisper Dish. What was to be a band became a solo project for Devonport based artist Tim McNaughton – due to 2020’s ‘lockdown.’ Formerly the guitarist for Marlin’s Dreaming, Tim’s music on Whisper Dish is like a transportation to another era, yet still pulls on modern music’s zesty heartstrings.

Whisper Dish’s new single Money Home was recorded in the lounge of a temporary house sit in Auckland. It was the first song recorded for their new EP The Desert Wind directly after borrowing a bass guitar from a friend. The punchy bassline arrived swiftly and dictated the direction of the song that followed. The excitement in having acquired this bass guitar set the vibe of this track in particular, and of the EP as a whole.

Tim has achieved rare and specific alchemy. The lyrics, the tune and the artist’s voice make a complete affecting spell that fans, mystics, critics, and neuroscientists should all try to explain. The pandemic occurred midway through the recording
process of The Desert Wind, making it harder to get others involved, so the project became a DIY approach with the limited gear he owned. Tim has been teaching himself audio engineering through trial and error – in a makeshift cottage studio.

Whisper Dish’s new EP The Desert Wind is out now.
