The Early 20’s are a self-described emo band who are releasing their new EP Girl In Disguise which was recorded at Joel Little’s Big Fan and also at lead singer Adam River’s house, with Tyler Tantin recording the drums.
The EP starts with newest song Girl Down South which has a nice guitar intro from Cade Bond before drums hit. Slight pop punk vibes, catchy, punchy guitars. It really highlights Adam’s voice as the instruments are lighter in the background during the song. That girl down south is “full of bad habits and a cigarette in her mouth” so be warned!
Previously released single On & On is next and it has heavier drums and guitar to start. This song feels more grungy and Adam’s vocals remind me of early Nirvana songs and especially Cobain’s voice in Smells Like Teen Spirit. I feel like there is a lot more focus on the instruments than lyrics in this song with the chorus being repetitive, but it’s not a bad thing.
Not This Time is also an already released single and it’s giving more angst but also upbeat vibes! There is a mean instrumental near the end. I find myself enjoying the suspense of the “Am I caving in?…. No, not this time!”
Finally we have another unreleased song called Run. It begins with 1, 2, 3, go! And you know it’s gonna be a banger! This song makes me want to be rocking out to it in a mosh pit as it starts fast and hearty and by the end I am wishing I’m hearing it live as it is full of energy and is bound to be a crowd favourite. A great drum beat throughout it had me hand tapping and head bopping with Kane Gray really shining on drums in this track. The line “sing it out boys” and then some great group vocals make this song my favourite on the EP and it will definitely be added to my faves playlist.
Girl In Disguise may not consist of many songs but it’s enough to know that these guys are gonna be a band to watch out for!
